The Canadian skeleton team have been absolved of accusations that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a spot to secure their place.

A prominent American athlete a five-time Olympian accused the team from Canada of withdrawing a majority of its entered athletes from a recent event in New York. The allegation was this reduced the field, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender failed to earn her qualifying position for the Milan-Cortina Games.

“The current IBSF Rules permit member nations to withdraw athletes from an event at any time,” declared the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the IBSF stated it would not impose sanctions, dismissing the complaints as no rules were broken of its regulations.

Canada's Explanation

Reacting to the claims, the Canadian federation defended the decision, pointing to athlete welfare and the need for rest. The organization stated that some athletes had competed extensively that week and the decision was “correct, transparent and aligned with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Coaches from several affected nations had voiced “serious concerns” about the selection system's integrity.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games represent her last Games. Her path to qualification remains, the likely US team spots are projected for Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. She is a former world champion whose closest Olympic finish was just off the podium in Sochi 2014.
